Sophia Mak

Sophia Mak is a queer, gender non conforming, chinese-american maker and performer, currently based in Brooklyn, NY. They investigate the intersections of race, gender, class, sexuality, intergenerational trauma, and colonization through performance ritual by invoking the stories of their ancestors to honor old and new narratives and illuminate the collisions and intersections of our past, present, and potential selves.  

A recent graduate of NYU's Dept. of Art & Public Policy (Tisch), where they used performance as a method for decolonization and research to explore east asian trans-masculinities through the racial metaphor of the banana. An alumni of The Hemispheric Institute’s EMERGENYC, Sophia continues their life investigations as an artist, youth worker, first-gen child of immigrants, dedicated friend and sibling. They have presented at various venues both nationally and abroad including the Baltimore Museum of Art, La MaMA, and la Plaza de la Revolución (DF, México), to name a few.
